House of the Dragon covers the Targaryen civil war known as the Dance of the Dragons — sparked by King Viserys I Targaryen naming his daughter Rhaenyra as heir, then his second wife producing a son (Aegon II) who also claims the throne. Season 1 covered the political manoeuvring across decades, from Rhaenyra’s youth to the death of Viserys and Aegon II’s coronation by the Green faction. Gothic Mystery Coming-of-Age Dark ComedySeason 2 picks up with Wednesday back at Nevermore Academy after the events of Season 1. She is now a reluctant celebrity — her takedown of the Hyde made her famous, but fame is Wednesday’s worst nightmare. The season’s central plot thread is a vision Wednesday has of Enid (Emma Myers) dying — and her desperate effort to prevent it. New principal Barry Dort (Steve Buscemi) takes over from the deceased Weems, and the psychiatric hospital Willow Hill becomes central to the mystery. Part 1 ends on a cliffhanger: Wednesday is pushed out a window by Tyler (Hunter Doohan) at Willow Hill. Part 2 brings her back, introduces Lady Gaga as Rosaline Rotwood (a legendary Nevermore teacher), and resurrects Gwendoline Christie’s Weems as Wednesday’s spirit guide.

Season 2’s critical score of 87% is strong but trails Season 1. Common critique: the expanded Addams Family presence, while fun, sometimes slows Wednesday’s individual arc. The Lady Gaga casting was the season’s marketing centrepiece — she released a new song “Dead Dance” tied to her Part 2 appearance. Season 3 was confirmed in July 2025 before Season 2 had even finished airing, and filming began February 23, 2026. The season’s central shock — which the show telegraphs less than the game does — arrives early: Joel is brutally killed by Abby (Kaitlyn Dever), a military-trained soldier whose father was among the Firefly doctors Joel killed at the end of Season 1. This death drives Ellie’s rage-fuelled revenge arc through the remaining six episodes.

Kaitlyn Dever’s Abby performance was the season’s critical highlight — she plays a character the audience initially despises and makes her genuinely complex. The 7-episode run (shorter than Season 1’s 9) covers roughly the first half of the game; the second half, which gives Abby her own parallel revenge storyline, is expected to be covered across Seasons 3 and potentially 4. At 37 million average viewers, Season 2 outperformed Season 1 despite a shorter episode count.

The finale (“The Rightside Up,” Dec 31) scored 7.9 on IMDb, with audiences describing it as “rushed” and “safe.” The final season holds a 85% critic score but only 56% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes — the series’ biggest critic/audience divide.

The Duffer Brothers have confirmed the main series is over. A spinoff is in development but will feature different characters in a different town — not a continuation of the Hawkins cast’s story. Stranger Things: The First Shadow, a stage play set before Season 1 events, has been running in London’s West End since 2023.
